Text Box: interesting that Butch Calvert nosed out Dee Munsell 105-108 for the unofficial title. Oz was a “bad guy” on Saturday and a good guy on Sunday.
Text Box: Newlywed Charlie Lacy, finished 11th with only one 200 game….a 216 in his 19th game. The headpin was left standing after 2 shots an estimated Text Box: 50 times. El Presidente almost made it. The 5-pin was missed an estimated 87 times. Officially, everybody tied for “Dog of The Week”, but it was Text Box: Jim’s Notes
Text Box: In a tournament where no one averaged 200, Gary Dickinson just hung around close enough to go around Mike Lynch and Avery Leblanc. Mike could have won his first SASBA tournament with a mark in the 10th, but an open frame handed the match to Avery 190-188 and the title to Gary. Maury Newman got 4th and David Rountree rounded out the top five.
Thanks to Daniel Cruz and employees for being great hosts in their first try at hosting a SASBA tourney. Their new Kegel lane machine broke Friday night and they did the lanes by hand for Saturday morning. The result was the hardest lane condition in any SASBA tourney that this member has witnessed. However, it was consistent from squad to squad and from Saturday to Sunday. Spares were at a premium and hardly anyone could strike more than twice in a row. Longer strings usually required some breaks. Daniel and staff handled it Text Box: great and I think most SASBA bowlers took on the challenge and in the long run, will be better bowlers for it.
The mechanic on duty during B squad on Saturday jumped down from the machine and broke his leg, requiring surgery with pins and a rod late into the night. The first thing he said after the accident was how sorry he was he couldn’t fix the machine he was working on. He felt bad about letting us down. I tried to assure him that fixing the machine was no longer important. Anyway, we took up a collection for him and our generous group of men and women collected $640 for him and his family. Way to go SASBA members! Class acts as usual.
We got a few new members and there were appearances by guys we hadn’t seen in some time, including Jim “everybody” Duck, David Gorsch, George Vaughn, Tim “we’re not in Kansas anymore Text Box: Toto” Easley, Larry Pringle, James Pitre, Jim “every day is Saturday” Petty, and Joe “I can’t believe I made it” Diaz, who made the finals.
Our next tournament is the Firecracker on July 4th weekend. Sweepers will be on Thursday, qualifying on Friday and Saturday and finals on Sunday. There are two separate tournaments with $2500 added in each. Entry fee is $230 and half the field will cash in each tournament.
The following week we will be in OKC for an over 50/over 60, over 67 trio event. We only have 3 spots left for that one. The third weekend in July, we will be in Alexandria, LA for a regular singles and then in Odessa for a SS/Guest Doubles.
